Wow... Just... Wow...
Parents at first consented to the relationship, then soured on him
Derrick Kenrick spent two years cultivating a relationship with a 13-year-old Washington County girl from his home in Rome, Ga., both online and on the telephone.
He told her his name was "Dirk," and that he was 19 years old. Later, he told her he was 22.
But when he showed up at her home in August 2004, he was actually 49. Despite his being more than three times the girl's age, her parents allowed her to date Mr. Kenrick.
Ultimately, the parents put a halt to the relationship and contacted police. In July, Mr. Kenrick pleaded guilty to traveling across state lines to have sexual relations with a minor.
Yesterday, he was sentenced to nearly four years in prison.
During an hourlong hearing, some of the details of Mr. Kenrick's life were exposed. That background, according to his public defender, Michael Novara, is long and indicative of what his client did.
"There's no indication my client is a pedophile. This was a misguided man who entered into a relationship he obviously should not have," Mr. Novara said.
Mr. Kenrick, who spent most of his life as Charles Salter, discovered several years ago that the man who raised him was not his biological father. The news apparently sent him into a tailspin. He changed his name to that of his father, Derrick Kenrick.
"I would say he kind of went a little crazy about that," Mr. Novara told the court.
Mr. Kenrick started looking for relationships with younger women, his lawyer said, and found one with the girl in Washington County. In August 2004, after talking with the girl online and on the phone, he arrived at her home.
The girl's parents invited Mr. Kenrick in and allowed him to stay for a week. During that time, he gave them $1,600 and bought them furniture.
Mr. Kenrick later moved into a nearby apartment and continued to date the girl. The girl's father even gave Mr. Kenrick permission to marry his daughter after she finished high school.
At some point, though, Mr. Kenrick became "too controlling," and the girl's parents ordered him to stay away from her. When he didn't, they went to police, and he was arrested in October 2004.
In court yesterday, Mr. Kenrick, with longish, dark hair parted neatly down the middle and a noticeable paunch, apologized to the victim and his own family.
"I accept responsibility for the fact I allowed the contact to occur between myself and the victim," he said. "I don't know what happened, your honor."
In trying to get the lowest possible sentence for his client, Mr. Novara told U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab that Mr. Kenrick had the girl's parents' blessing to pursue the relationship.
"It's clear to all parties this was a consensual matter," the defense attorney said.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Kaufman disagreed. "The government feels this is an extremely egregious offense," he said.
Though there was no forcible contact, he continued, laws are designed to protect minors because they don't have the judgment to make good decisions regarding relationships.
"Minors cannot really consent to this kind of conduct," Mr. Kaufman said.
He also blamed the girl's parents for allowing the relationship to occur.
In addition to a 46-month prison sentence, Judge Schwab ordered Mr. Kenrick to lifetime supervised release and to register as a sex offender.
Another story has even more details than this "Killing Humanity Softly" article:
After maintaining the long-distance courtship, Kenrick drove with his adopted 2-year-old son from Rome, Ga., to the girl's home near Canonsburg in August 2004. The girl's mother was startled by the man's age. Nevertheless, Kenrick and the boy soon were staying in the family's house, where the man and the girl engaged in sexual activity -- ranging from the two kissing to Kenrick fondling the teen, the court document states.
The two became engaged in November 2004, with the girl telling Kenrick that she would marry him in "God's time" and her parents saying it would have to be after she finished high school. Kenrick spent more than $1,600 to furnish the family's house, but the relationship began to sour when Kenrick became increasingly controlling and jealous of the girl's male friends at school.
In a love letter to the girl, Kenrick wrote: "I know your age -- yes, I also know your heart. ... Just remember this, in a wee-month, year, or years, I'LL NEVER STOP loving you, and any time you want me, you can find me and I'll be there for you. Our love will never die."
Police were made aware of the situation after Kenrick threatened the girl's parents through an e-mail message.
"I am playin' no games, you opened your home to me, an adult, to be alone with a 15 year old," he wrote. "Open your instant messenger to me, or there will be consequences to pay on your behalf."
I just can't... I can't... The story says it all.
My mind has been blown.
